What can you do to reinforce math concepts at home?

  • Quiz your child on their math facts.  They should be studying these 10 minutes every night.

  • When doing homework, be sure your child is using the Problem Solving Checklist.  This can be found in parent resources.

The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.

In math we began the year by reviewing place value.  Students are using what they learned in 2nd grade and extending their knowledge to compose and decompose numbers up to 999,999. Students are also expected to know how to put numbers in order in various ways.

A goal this year is for students to be fluent with their math facts in addition, subtraction and multiplication and division.  Fluency means speed and accuracy, or being able to recall the fact correctly within 3 seconds.  Please continue to work on this home all year.

Problem solving is another big idea in all grades.  Students practice problem solving by using a checklist to help them stay organized and remember to use best practices.  We have included a copy of this checklist on the parent resource page of this webpage.

We will be using Think Through Math again this year.  Students have a sequence of lessons to follow online to support what we are doing in class.  The sequence does not always fall inline with the topics we are studying in class.  It is not uncommon for students to struggle a bit with these unfamilar topics, but please be assurred we will be teaching all of the concepts this year in class.
